Vikas Gupta teaches in the Department of History at Delhi University. His broad area of academic engagement includes historical and contemporary aspects of education in modern India with special focus on curricular knowledge, social inequalities, state policies and school practices. Vikas Gupta jointly published with KM Shrimali and others a book on Teaching History from Aakar in 2013. His two forthcoming books are also on the theme of modern education in India. One of them is an edited volume being published by Orient Blackswan on Modern Transformations and the Challenges of Inequality in Education in India. He has contributed many book chapters in different volumes and articles in leading journals such as Economic and Political Weekly, Seminar, and Mainstream etc. Besides this, He is the Associate Editor of Reconstructing Education for Emancipation, which is a very popular quarterly Newsletter of All-India Forum for Right to Education. He has delivered lectures at different internationally and nationally renowned educational institutions.

The German Historical Institute and Charles Wallace Trust for India provided to Vikas Gupta fellowships for archival studies in the UK in the year 2015. In October 2014, Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) awarded him a two-year project on “Inequality and Education in Modern India”. ICHR had also awarded Vikas Gupta with a grant in 2008 enabling him to go to UK for collecting certain archival documents on colonial education.

Vikas Gupta Coordinated an International Conference organized of Department of History, Delhi University on the theme of ‘Modern Transformations and the Challenges of Inequality in Education in India’, which was held on November 27th-29th, 2014. Within Delhi University, Vikas has served at many important committees, such as the Core Committee of the Equal Opportunity Cell; Faculty of Social Sciences; joint committee of EOC and Examination Branch for drafting Exam Guidelines for Students with Disabilities; and Library, Accessibility, and Seminar Committees of the Department of History, Delhi University.

In addition to his regular work in Delhi University, Vikas Gupta is also associated with many organizations. For instance, he is a Member of the Secretariat of the All-India Forum for Right to Education (AIFRTE) which is formed of its more than two hundred member organizations across the country and which is striving for fully and directly state funded common education system from KG to PG. Vikas Gupta is a member of the Board of Trustees of Kishore Bharati, which has been a pioneering organization in the field of learner centric and socially contextualized transformative learning process and environment conservation.
